Course venues

Two miles north of the village of Broughton, Broughtonknowe is a privately owned mixed woodland, planted some 35 years ago. It is 45 minutes by car from Edinburgh on the A701, or 30 minutes from Moffat. The courses take place in a woodland glade under a tarpaulin shelter, but in extreme conditions we can move our operations into a large shed.

There is a washroom and composting toilet facility on site, and cooking facilities. Rainwater is harvested for washing etc. Drinking water is brought in. Camping is possible by negotiation and there are B & Bs in Broughton.

2018 Courses: May 7 - 11, July 9 - 13

From 2018 courses will also be held at Beechwood, near Gorebridge, on a reclaimed pithead site. Here the industrial past is giving way to beech trees and imaginative landscaping projects.  The escarpment faces west towards the Pentlands.

Gorebridge is on the Waverley line, and easily reached from Edinburgh in the north or Galashiels in the south. The venue is a walk of about a mile from the station.

Courses take place under a tarpaulin shelter. There are toilet and washroom facilites. Camping is possible by negotiation.

2018 Courses: June 4 - 8, June 18 - 22, September 10 - 14

Corehead Farm, Moffat

Corehead is a 1,580 acre (640 hectare) hill farm in the Southern Uplands, Dumfries & Galloway. The Devil’s Beef Tub, Hart Fell Shoulder and the source of the River Annan sit within its boundaries. The Devil’s Beef Tub, a cavernous hollow in the hills where the notorious Border Reivers once hid their stolen cattle, is one of the most iconic landmarks in the South of Scotland.

Corehead Farm was acquired by the Borders Forest Trust in 2009, as 'a community-engaged, sustainable project integrating the restoration of native woodlands, wetlands and heathlands with a farm operating on organic principles. It will become an important educational resource in the South of Scotland demonstrating how biodiversity, ecosystem services and farming can thrive together'.

Participants will be able to camp on site, or stay in nearby Moffat. Drinking water and cooking facilities are provided, but running water is strictly natural! There is a composting toilet.

2018 course: August 6 - 10
